There was no indication in the announcement as to the number of watches that will be released in the edition. So, again, this blog recommends that if you like the look and want one of these, you might want to make the move when they become available. G-Shock buyers have learned the hard way – never take for granted that any watch model will be around indefinitely.

The prices seem high for these special-run products, but the value is usually realized (with some patience) when the items are sold out and become rarer.

Revisiting a Classic

I wouldn’t normally report on an older watch, especially not a Timex, but this particular item continues to get a lot of attention in the search engines. Evidently, there are a few of them around in the retail shops and people are doing their due diligence on the product before making the leap. In some ways, this watch is an anomaly in the Timex coral – it has a finish that mimics the much more expensive brands: Black IP stainless 45mm case, buttons, logo’d crown and bracelet – with a lot of machine textured (clous de Paris) details. The rotating coin-edge “slide-rile” bezel (also black) is a nice touch. The chrono function is limited to 30 minutes. It is hard to recommend the purchase of this item given the availability of so many similar alternative products. Timex watches are generally not collectible, certainly not this one, and do not appreciate in value like a few other brands do when a sku becomes rare. On the other hand, if you like this rather macho design and can get one of these in good shape, used, it’s a good value at around $75.

This new series of mid-priced (range from $425 to $500) timepieces is available in black or white dial with stainless mesh or leather strap. The two-hand base model has a single sub-dial which displays seconds and the step-up model has three hands and sub-dials that display day, date and dual time (24 hour). its playful coloring (reminds one of Alain Silberstein, but without the toy-like embellishments) and extra clean case and minutes-only markers make it somewhat minimalistic and likely to be appreciated by fans of the “mid-century-modern” era designers such as Eames, Panton, van der Rohe, and Saarinen. With a stylishly large (45mm) stainless steel case, this basic wrist watch is good to go in either a dress or sports setting. It’s dial is sunken with a semi-vertical minute-marked chapter ring (as usually implemented on higher end watches(. The two subtle, but easy to read sub-dials indicate day and date. The crown is non-slip machined and signed (Nautica logo). Adding to it’s excellent presentation are the signed stainless buckle and the nice contrast of polished bezel and brushed case. It’s a heck of a watch for 60 bucks!

GW-4000 Series – This blog announced three of the four GW-4000 “triple-G-resist” watches which were to be released back in October/November – then the news came that Casio had suffered catastrophic setbacks because serious flooding had halted production in several of their orient based manufacturing facilities. Re-emerged, the GW-4000-1AJF, GW-4000A-1AJF and the GW-4000-1A3JF are joined now by an additional model; THE GW-4000D-1AJF. This series flagships the non-digital Sky Cockpit – Aviation – Gravity Defier lines and is distinguished by the extra shock resistance made possible by using an absorbent gel inside the case. The GW-4000D-1AJF has slightly different face markings and an upgraded black IP coated stainless bracelet with a button release clasp. Though this series is the toughest and most accurate on the planet, they are no where near as feature-rich as other, less expensive G-Shocks.

AWG-M100A-3AJF – G-Shock has been enjoying success with gold-tone highlighted models recently and their ani-digi models sell particularly well, so it is no surprise that this new AWG-M100 version is being rolled out. We’ve seen the product before in other colorways.

AWG-M100B-1AJR – We are seeing more G-Shocks in stealth versions and with a lot less of the typical branding and included features lettering that litters and cheapens the presentation. But on this one, you have to look closely to see the labels and this blogger is happy about that!

DW-6900MR-1JF – If you wanted a DW6900 with some gold, but not as much as there is on the DW6900GB-1, then this model may be the one for you. A mix of gray “Metallic Dial Series” highlights with some gold accents gives this watch a slightly less garish look. Otherwise, of course, it’s the same watch.

DW-6900MR-7JF – Also a member of the “Metallic Dial Series,” this white watch features less indicia and more of the same tech. Riley at MyGshock.com thinks the DW6900s will make it to worldwide distribution.

Minimalist G-Shock – According to G-Street, the following three watches are to be released in February. Evidently, Casio is realizing that a lot of us don’t want all the lettering on our wrist and are reacting with a bunch of cleaner looking stuff. One wonders, what took them so long?

G-Shock X Lower Limited Edition
$299 NZD..According to Good as Gold, Lower takes the G-shock DW-5600EG-9VS (the grandaddy of all G-shock models) to new levels for their amazing new colab creation. Taking inspiration partly from their own farming experiences and partly as humble homage to New Zealand farming culture in general, they incorporated a leather protector, sheep wool lined leather case and a sheepdog whistle to boot. The black leather case is hand made in New Zealand by traditional master craftsmen. 200m Water Resistant, Backlight, Flash Alert, Stopwatch, Countdown Timer, Multi-Function Alarm. There will be only 100 of these gems available, Check Lower’s website for details on where they were distributed.

Cheap Beaters to Substitute for Your Expensive G-Shock – The following (non G-Shock) products from Casio fall into the categories of Dress (AQS800WD-1EV) and Sports (AQS800W-1B2V). Though they look completely different, they share the same movement, the 5208 (which is solar powered) and are distinguished from other Casios by their inclusion of dual countdown timers. Since coming to the USA market last November, both models have become top sellers and garner exceptionally high praise from their new owners. Casio has been the big winner for years in the “features for the money” game, and these two exemplary watches represent astounding value at a price point that competitors can’t hope to match.

At only 10.5mm thick, these watches are thin enough to hug the wrist and not snag sleeves like most other multi-function units. The buttons do not protrude but are easy to use because they have a finger-gripping nubby surface. Also, unlike their G-Shock cousins, the case is not gratuitously bumpy/lumpy. There is no crown to dig into the back of your hand. Reading the time in the dark is easy: the generous lume on the analog hands lasts for several hours and the digital LED panel has a button operated backlight. To get a good fit, links can be removed from the (AQS800WD-1EV) bracelet.

More useful than world time, the 12/24 hour readout is important to many people – missing an important meeting or being two hours too late to bid on an eBay item because of a botched mental 12 to 24 hour conversion can be avoided with these watches. Being able to set multiple alarms can help keep the crucial scheduling snafus from occurring.

At $37 (when on sale), these beaters are the answer to time management problems when and where you want to not care if the watch survives.

G-Shock Jelly – found by watchuseek geeks
In completely unrelated and irrelevant news, these watches were spotted on G-Street’s blog and watchuseek’s G-Shock forum and brought to the world’s attention as though they were important new releases. I thought I’d include them in this post, since the G-Shock announcements have been a little anemic of late.

Though it is not their slickest diver technology, it certainly is a “looker” that will draw attention and it;s depth and timer functions will come in handy for those who want an uncomplicated device to measure how deep and how long their single dive is. This blogger is always attracted to watches that have lots of useful features, manual rotating inner chapter ring slide rule and dense dial markings, It’s a bit flashy, certainly a dress-up watch with its gold-tone finish, but would match nicely when worn with gold cuff links, wedding band, tie tack, with black shoes and black belt – gold-tone buckle black shirt and a brown or tan suit (just me, guys – I like to make the outfit fit the watch). It is large, not because big is the current fashion but because it needs to be to fit all the useful features. This watch is a bold statement to anyone who notices such things, “here’s a man of intelligence and action!”

This model will also be available in a brown and red dial version, sporting a dark brown leather strap – model BL5403-03X. The discounted price will be around $320. For those of you who like the features but want it in black, the BL5405-59E is for you ($394). The predecessor to these watches is the BL5400-52 (silver-tone case and band), is still available and has been seen on eBay for as low as $250.

Orange luminous hands, large, easy to read numbers and markings on a black dial and IP black stainless case give this 42mm X 11mm timepiece a sporty look. It has a day-date display window, lumed second hand and machined crown.. The brown strap is not to this blogger’s taste – the watch would look a whole lot better with a replacement.

Despite not being a brand new release, this late model product is one that screams for some attention. Remarkably well priced, this one is built to last and not be too heavy of all titanium – and I mean all: crown, case and back, bracelet, and even the pushers. Appropriately the crystal is anti-reflective coated sapphire. An interesting feature among the complications is an anomalous switching of function – the large second hand is used for the chrono and the seconds sub-dial (at 6) continuously spins as time-keeping seconds. This is a great feature for those who use the stop-watch – the big second hand sweeping easier to read the critical seconds.. nice touch!
